Dissertation Defense
Choosing a Dissertation defense date
should be made in consultation with the Dissertation Committee.
The final version of the Dissertation should be
given to each Committee member and the PhD Coordinator at least four weeks prior
to the public defense. If all Committee members and the program coordinator
agree to accept a copy with less time, the final version may be submitted up to
at least two weeks prior to the public defense.
Time
Management of Dissertation Defenses:
Dissertation defenses should be scheduled with appropriate
consideration of the amount of time needed for the candidate
to make his/her presentation and provide ample opportunity
for all participants in the defense to ask relevant
questions. Ensure a block of time for the defense when all
committee members can devote 2-3 hours of time without
interruption. The dissertation defense is considered the
final examination on the way to receiving a doctoral degree.
It is important that the defense provide all involved an
ample opportunity to judge the candidate’s knowledge on the
topic of the dissertation.
