Teaching Assistantships:
The Biology
Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in Biology at
UNC, Charlotte has Teaching Assistantships (TAs)
available for full-standing students in this
program. These are awarded only as full
assistantships, and normally require a work load
equivalent to the teaching of two labs with
associated preparation each week. The student must
maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 and carry at
least six hours of course work per semester
to qualify for a TA. Students interested in a TA
award should notify the Ph.D.
Coordinator. A TA position is awarded for a
one-year term. This means that students teach both fall and
spring semesters, but not the summer sessions; however, TAs are paid on a 12 month calendar. TA
positions normally are renewable if the student's
and course instructor's
evaluations of teaching, and the dissertation advisor's evaluation
of progress in the program, are satisfactory.
Notes: 1) Eligible
PhD
students are guaranteed a TA position for four
years. Awards for additional years will be based
upon individual student situations, performance, and available
funds. To date, every student who has requested a TA
position has received one.
2) A faculty advisor can have no more than 2 PhD
students holding a TA position.
3) Students admitted after fall 2005 must
enroll for nine hours of course work per semester.
Research Assistantships:
Research
Assistantships (RAs) may be available to Ph.D.
students depending on the funding of research grants
by the Doctoral Faculty. Thus application for RAs
are filed with faculty members holding the grants.
Additionally, several RAs are available through the
Carolinas Medical Center (CMC).
