Poikilotherms, or cold-blooded animals, include such diverse groups as mollusks, crustaceans, insects, starfish, worms - in fact, all marine and aquatic invertebrates, as well as fish. Poikilotherms comprise >95% of animal biodiversity and their physiology dramatically differs from homeotherms such as birds and mammals. Body temperature of poikilotherms directly varies with the ambient temperature. Therefore, they are especially prone to changes in the environmental temperature, for example such as expected in the case of global warming.
