Research Interests

  • Detection and therapeutic intervention in various form of circulatory shock.

Research Projects (last 5 years):

Project title: Diagnostic significance of nontraumatic emergency department hypotension.

Goal: Test the diagnostic ability of SBP < 100 mm Hg to predict in-hospital mortality.

Status: Enrollment ongoing.

Project title: Randomized controlled trial of goal-directed ultrasound in the management of non-traumatic undifferentiated hypotension.

Goal: Test if emergency-physician operated ultrasonography can improve the accuracy of the immediate differential diagnosis of non-traumatic hypotension.

Status: Published, Critical Care Medicine, August 2004.

Project title: Non-traumatic prehospital hypotension predicts in-hospital mortality.

Goal: Test if exposure to systolic hypotension during ambulance transport is associated with increased risk of death during hospitalization.

Status: Published, Annals Emergency Medicine, 2004.

Project title: Focused training of emergency medicine residents in goal-directed echocardiography.

Goal: Test if a focused echocardiography training course would improve the accuracy of completion and interpretation of goal-directed echocardiogram by EM residents.

Status: Published, Academic Emergency Medicine, 2003.

Project title: Inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis during polystyrene microsphere-induced pulmonary embolism in the rat.

Goal: Test the effect of inhibition of thromboxane synthase versus cyclooxygenase on pulmonary gas exchange and heart function during simulated PE in the rat.
