Essays

Essay Projects
The 3 essays constitute the "Writing Intensive" portion of the course. Each essay has a different style and brief descriptions of them are included below. We will introduce these essays and the way to do them in class each time, as well as going over some aspects of writing before and after each assignment. Please do not hesitate to ask questions about the subject matter and the process of writing. We will receive your papers on the scheduled dates (see syllabus), make comments, and return them to you for revision, private discussion (if desired) and final grade.

Each essay must include and adhere to the following:

bullet A title (ex. "Essay 1: Title")
bullet 500 word minimum, 2 pages maximum
bullet 1" margins
bullet Use a standard readable font (hand-written will not be accepted)
bullet Number pages with your last name and number (ex. Smith, 2)
bullet Staple all pages together
bullet Properly cited sources listed at the bottom of pg. 2 (Author. Date. Title. Publication. Vol. Pages. -- For examples of properly cited references, see pg. 479 of your textbook.)– If your source is on the internet, you must list URL AND additional information – a URL only is not acceptable. (Example of a properly cited internet reference: Smith, Alisa; MacKinnon, James. The 100 mile diet. Why eat local? http://100milediet.org/why-eat-local.)

Each 30 pt essay will be graded as follows:

15 points ---Mechanics: Grammar, sentence structure, word usage, spelling, punctuation, citations, following the essay requirements above (points will be deducted if not followed)
10 points --- Revision: How well did you improve your essay after comments given? You must do more than simply correcting mistakes pointed out to receive revision credits.

Essay Descriptions

Essay 1 Topic: Where food comes from – and why it matters (or doesn’t).

Your essay will be a reaction/response/reflection on one (or more) of the following articles: "
From Friends to Food" (Charlotte Observer) ; "More university students call for organic, 'sustainable' food" (USA Today) ; excerpt from "In Defense of Food" (Michael Pollan) . You are analyzing what you read and responding personally (with informed opinion) to that analysis. Your response should be written as if you are writing a blog or a newspaper editorial meant for an intelligent audience, reacting to the article(s) . Just because you are writing your opinion (rather than a research paper, for instance) does not mean it can be written sloppily/carelessly. Good writing takes attention to detail and is well-thought out – even if the style appears spontaneous and less formal.

Essay 2 Topic: How to choose a breakfast cereal.

You are to write an informative, persuasive essay to another person (or people) convincing him/her to eat a more nutritious breakfast, specifically by understanding how to evaluate breakfast cereals and why. Your information will come primarily from the resources provided below - read the comments before each link for points to consider.  The key article is the Consumer Reports Article from 1989 (yes, I know some of you were not yet born then, but the article is much more complete than anything more recent!)  You must read and reference the main article, plus at least 2 others from the list below or of your own finding.

Main Article: C
onsumer Reports, 1989 + additional nutritional information

Additional Articles:
What's in your bowl? How does this short article compare to the 1989 Consumer Reports Article?

Briefly summarize plot (no more than 20% of essay), then explain what you think about it and how it impacted you.
