Economic Botany
is a writing-intensive course for Biology majors. Prerequisite: Biol 2130 or a course in Plant Biology. Economic Botany explores the relationship between plants
and humans from biological, historical, anthropological, and
geographical perspectives.

Course objectives
: 1. to foster greater awareness,
appreciation, and knowledge of the botanical world, especially
the interrelatedness and dependence of humans upon these natural
resources. 2. to learn the important plant families
of useful plants and reinforce principles of plant biology 3. to
learn the geographic distribution of key, economically and
nutritionally important plants 4. to become more aware of
the personal food chain and nutritional values of food plants. 5. to
practice and improve basic writing skills through a process of
writing, feedback, and revision.

Location & Time: Class meets in the McMillan
Greenhouse classroom, Tuesdays & Thursdays, 11-12:15.

Attendance Policy:
Attendance and participation in class is expected. Announcements
will be made in class that are not posted elsewhere. The
majority of test material will come from topics focused-on in
lecture. Regular attendance is crucial to your success in this
course.

Grades
Each test and assignment is worth a certain number of
points (see breakdown). The total number of points for the
course is 580. At the end of the course your total points
will be added up and divided by 580 to yield a percentage.
Letter grades are assigned as follows: 90-100% = A ;
80-89% = B; 70-79% = C ; 60-69% = D ; <60% = F.
